Cephalotaxus: The Plum Yew

چکیده

sent Cephalotaxus to Europe where it was received with interest and appreciation.2 Siebold grew five different Cephalotaxus in his own garden in Japan, along with many other plants he had discovered, cultivating them for their beauty and for evaluation as garden plants. Today, although plum yews are widely considered some of the most beautiful and useful of evergreen conifers, their potential as ornamental and medicinal plants has yet to be fully explored and utilized. The endangered status of Cephalotaxus in the wild-particularly in China, its "distribution center and refuge,"3 where it is vulnerable to the increasing demands of an exploding human population-lends a sense of urgency to efforts to learn more about this fascinating genus. At the Arnold Arboretum, we are working to help conserve Cephalotaxus while continuing to study and propagate the genus for use in cultivation.

Nematotoxicity of drupacine and a Cephalotaxus alkaloid preparation against the plant-parasitic nematodes Meloidogyne incognita and Bursaphelenchus xylophilus.

BACKGROUND Species of Cephalotaxus (the plum yews) produce nematotoxic compounds of unknown identity. Consequently, bioassay-guided fractionation was employed to identify the compound(s) in Cephalotaxus fortunei twigs and leaves with activity against plant-parasitic nematodes. RESULTS A crude alkaloid extract, particularly drupacine, was responsible for much of the nematotoxicity. The ED50 of...

Ancient Nuclear Plastid DNA in the Yew Family (Taxaceae)

Plastid-to-nucleus DNA transfer provides a rich genetic resource to the complexity of plant nuclear genome architecture. To date, the evolutionary route of nuclear plastid DNA (nupt) remain unknown in conifers. We have sequenced the complete plastomes of two yews, Amentotaxus formosana and Taxus mairei (Taxaceae of coniferales). Our comparative genomic analyses recovered an evolutionary scenari...

Investigation of the essential oils from three Cephalotaxus species.

Essential oils from leaves of Cephalotaxus fortunei Hook., Cephalotaxus haningtonia K. Koch., Cephalotaxus sinensis Li. and variety Cephalotaxus harringtonia var. drupacea Koidz. underwent qualitative and quantitative analysis. The content of the oils obtained by hydrodistillation in the investigated species was 0.01 - 0.22% v/w. Gas chromatography (GC-MS) with flame ionisation detector (FID) s...

Quantitative gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry of Cephalotaxus alkaloids.

Plants of the genus Cephalotaxus contaim many alkaloids, some of which have demonstrated antitumor activity. Analysis of crude alkaloid mixtures by gas chromatography provides quantitation of the active principles and other, non-active, alkaloids. Mass spectrometry is used to identify known alkaloids in extracts and to confirm the presence of previously unknown ones. Such data provide a means f...

Cell-to-cell transport through plasmodesmata in tree callus cultures.

One factor that contributes to a successful fruit tree grafting is the establishment of symplasmic contacts in the graft interface to facilitate the transfer of compounds between scion and stock. Using novel experimental and theoretical approaches we investigated whether the localized incompatibility, experienced in some Prunus grafts, could be related to insufficient plasmodesmal coupling at a...
